The headscarf is an increasingly contentious symbol in countries across the world. Those who don the headscarf in Germany are referred to as ""integration-refusers."" In Turkey, support by and for headscarf-wearing women allowed a religious party to gain political power in a strictly secular state. A niqab-wearing Muslim woman was denied French citizenship for not conforming to national values. And in the Netherlands, Muslim women responded to the hatred of popular ultra-right politicians with public appeals that mixed headscarves with in-your-face humor. In a surprising way, the headscarf-a g

"An incisive theoretical manifesto arguing that feminism is the only route to an antifascist global future. In this exciting, innovative work, Polish feminist philosopher Ewa Majewska maps the creation of feminist counterpublics around the world--spaces of protest and ideas, community and common struggle, that can challenge the emergence of fascist states as well as Western democratic "public spheres" populated by atomized, individual subjects. Drawing from Eastern Europe and the Global South, Majewska describes the mass labor movement of Poland's Solidarnosc in 1980 and contemporary feminist movements across Poland and South America, arguing that it is outside of the West that we can see the most promising left futures. Majewska argues for the creation of a feminist public--a politics and a world held in common--and outlines the tactics this political goal demands, arguing for a feminist political theory that does not reproduce the same forms of domination it seeks to overcome" -- Amazon.

Brokered Subjects digs deep into the accepted narratives of sex trafficking to reveal the troubling assumptions that have shaped both right- and left-wing agendas around sexual violence. Drawing on years of in-depth fieldwork, Elizabeth Bernstein sheds light not only on trafficking but also on the broader structures that meld the ostensible pursuit of liberation with contemporary techniques of power. Rather than any meaningful commitment to the safety of sex workers, Bernstein argues, what lies behind our current vision of trafficking victims is a transnational mix of putatively humanitarian militaristic interventions, feel-good capitalism, and what she terms carceral feminism: a feminism compatible with police batons.

"When are women well represented politically speaking? The popular consensus has been for some time, when descriptive representatives put women's issues and feminist interests onto the political agenda. Today, such certainty has been well and truly shaken. Differences amongst women - especially how they conceive of their 'interests' - is said to fatally undermine the principle and practice of women's group representation. There has been a serious loss of faith, too, in legislatures as the site where political representation takes place. Feminist Democratic Representation responds by making a second-generation feminist design intervention. Firmly grounded in feminist empirical political science, our design shows how women's misrepresentation is best met procedurally. We take women's differences as our starting point, adopt an indivisible conception of representation, and reclaim the role of legislatures. We introduce a new group of actors - the affected representatives of women - and two new parliamentary practices: group advocacy and account giving. Working with a series of vignettes - abortion, prostitution, Muslim women's dress, and Marine Le Pen - we explore how these representational problematics might fare were our feminist democratic process of representation in place. The ideal representative effects are broader than simply descriptive or substantive: they include effects relating to affinity, trust, legitimacy, symbolism, and affect. They manifest in stronger representative relationships amongst women in society, between women and their representatives, elected and affective, greater support for the procedures, institutions and substantive outputs of representative politics, and at a higher level, to the idea of representative democracy. Against the more fashionable tide of post-representative politics Feminist Democratic Representation argues for more and better representation"--

"This book charts the new phase of global struggles around gender equality and sexual democracy: the ultraconservative mobilization against "gender ideology" and feminist efforts to counteract it. It argues that anti-gender campaigns, which emerged around 2010 in Europe, are not a simple continuation of the anti-feminist backlash dating back to the 1970s, but part of a new political configuration. Opposition to "gender" has become a key element of the rise of right-wing populism, which successfully harnesses the anxiety, shame and anger caused by neoliberalism and threatens to destroy liberal democracy. Anti-Gender Politics in the Populist Moment offers a novel conceptualization of the relationship between the ultraconservative anti-gender movement and right-wing populist parties, examining the opportunistic synergy between these actors. The authors map the anti-gender campaigns as a global movement, putting the Polish case in a comparative perspective. They show that the anti-gender rhetoric is best understood as a reactionary critique of neoliberalism as a socio-cultural formation. The book also studies the recent wave of feminist mass mobilizations, viewing the transnational revolt of women as a left populist movement. This is an important study for those researching in Politics, Cultural Studies, Gender and Sexuality Studies and Sociology. It will also be useful for activists and policy makers"-- Provided by publisher.
